Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, brother die in car crash

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, died in a car accident near Zamora, Spain, police stated on Thursday.

Liverpool FC,  The Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and FPF confirmed it.

The Spanish Civil Guard told The Associated Press that Jota and his brother were discovered dead after their car had careened off a road on a deserted highway an hour west of Zamora. Authorities said the car –a Lamborghini, by police reckonings –was on fire.

Firefighters were brought in as the flames reached adjacent brush, officials stated.

Jota tributes pour in following Liverpool star’s death.

Police were probing the causes of the crash, which occurred after midnight local time. They said no other cars. The bodies were being analyzed forensically.

It wasn’t obvious who was behind the wheel. Police were investigating the theory that the crash occurred due to a blowout.

Jota, 28, and his brother, 25, were both Portuguese players and the only ones in the car, police said.

Jota’s death comes weeks after he wed Rute Cardoso and penned in a social post, ‘Sí al para siempre’ (‘Yes to forever’). They’ve got three kids, the youngest arriving just last year.

A Civil Guard spokesperson told ESPN that they think the driver lost control of the vehicle after a tire blew.

Jota made 182 appearances for Liverpool since his move from Wolves in 2020. He raised the Premier League trophy aloft in May, after already winning the FA Cup and a pair of Carabao Cups in his five years at the club.

Silva featured with Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions.

“LFC are broken by Diogo Jota’s tragic death,” the club said in a statement.

Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and ask for the privacy of Diogo and André’s family, friends, teammates and club staff to be respected as they attempt to come to terms with an unthinkable loss.

We will remain steadfast in our support for them.
